Thursday’s Sports-Roundup: Soccer, Volleyball and Golf

St. Joseph-Ogden’s soccer team scored one goal in two early-week matches and salvaged a tie to go with a loss.

The Spartans (3-9-2) played to a 1-1 draw with visiting Judah Christian on Monday and then were shut out a day later at Unity (8-6-1), 2-0.

Against Judah (6-6-2), Zac Seely scored, with an assist from Jordan Kelly.

Goalkeeper Joel Branson had nine saves.

The Spartans return to action today with a home match against Bloomington Central Catholic.

Oakwood/Salt Fork scored first, but Hoopeston Area scored the most and secured a 3-1 Vermilion Valley Conference soccer win on Tuesday.

Brady Tevebaugh got the Comets (5-9, 3-3) on the board, after an assist from Caleb Lashuay.

Goalie Aaron Dean had 12 saves.

The game was ended 5 minutes into the second half by lightning.

Volleyball

St. Joseph-Ogden’s volleyball team registered back-to-back two-set sweeps to start the week.

On Monday, SJ-O (15-2) overpowered visiting Maroa-Forsyth 25-18, 25-14. On Tuesday, the Spartans handed Rantoul a 25-9, 25-22 setback.

SJ-O carries a six-match winning streak into today’s match at Bloomington Central Catholic.

In the Monday win, Bree Trimble had nine digs, Emily Bigger had eight assists and Katelyn Berry had five kills.

Heritage (16-4) split two volleyball matches, falling at Tuscola (11-8) on Monday, 14-25, 26-24, 25-14 before sweeping visiting Martinsville 25-16, 25-17 on Tuesday.

In the win, Nicole Cheatham had 11 digs and Gracyn Allen landed 10 kills.

Oakwood (13-8) dropped volleyball matches on successive nights, starting with Monday’s 25-22, 25-17 setback against visiting Paxton-Buckley-Loda (12-7).

On Tuesday, in a showdown between the only two schools without a loss in Vermilion Valley Conference play, Armstrong-Potomac (11-7) dealt the Comets a 24-26, 25-23, 25-11 loss.

McKenzie Doan had eight assists against PBL. Teammates Kylie Neuman and Kerrigan Shafer had three kills apiece.

Against A-P, Doan had 17 assists and two aces. Shafer had nine kills and three blocks. Neuman had five kills. Paiton Frerichs had four kills.

The Comets return to action tonight at Milford (8-10)

Boys’ golf

Medalist Logen Hoshauer shot a 42, but the Comets were topped by Hoopeston Area, 218-235, in a dual meet at Rossville’s Hubbard Trail on Monday.

Oakwood returns to action today in the Vermilion Valley Conference Tournament at Danville’s Harrison Park.
