Ring and Maddock among Hall of Fame Inductees

Alongside welcoming St. Joseph-Ogden athletic teams home this week, the community will honor its own as it welcomes home the 2018 Hall of Fame class.

This year’s inductees include: Les Hoveln, Steve Maddock and Ashley Wright Paddock, Robbie Ring.

Ring, who passed away at the age of 63 while living in Florida in 2011, will be remembered for his contributions on the football and track field.

During his time playing football at St. Joseph-Ogden, Ring led the area in scoring. He also held the record for the 100-yard dash for four decades.

Ring continued to succeed after graduation, owning and operating several restaurants in Melbourne, FL. With all that time near the water, he later became a master with fiberglass, boat builder, carpenter, painter an avid angler.

A 1971 graduate of SJO, Steve Maddock participated in baseball, basketball and FFA for four years.

He continued his baseball career at Parkland, where he received an Associate Degree in Science. Maddock then played in the Eastern Illinois Baseball League for the Royal Giants for 17 years, leading the league in batting average and home runs at one point.

Maddock went on to continue to give back to his alma mater. Since 1983, he has helped run the clock for boys basketball games whenever he has been able to. He has also been a member of the Spartan Fan Club for 12 years, served as president of the club, and helped with the Spartan Golf Outing for eight years.

Additional stories on Les Hoveln and Ashely Wright Paddock have been featured in SJO Daily this week.
