Oakwood/Salt Fork capture honors at Vermillion County meet, SJO, Oakwood, Heritage get volleyball wins

The Oakwood/Salt Fork boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams both captured team honors in Tuesday’s Vermilion County meet at Kickapoo State Park.

The girls’ team had six top 10 individual placers and successfully followed up on the conference title they secured one week earlier.

The team leaders in the 3-mile race were Grace Davis (fourth in 22 minutes, 32 seconds), Mackenzie Russell (fifth in 22:46), McKenna Plotner (seventh in 23:42), Carlie Thompson (eighth in 24:17), Carlee Richardson (ninth in 24:40) and Amber Kirby (10th in 25:14).

The Oakwood/Salt Fork team score was 20 points. Runner-up Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin totaled 45 points.

In the boys’ race, three Comets gathered top 10 placements as the team edged Armstrong-Potomac, 44-51.

Andy Hohn was third in 17:34, Dawson Rogers was fourth in 17:42 and Cameron Helka was sixth in 18:01.

Both Oakwood/Salt Fork teams return to action on Saturday in the Tuscola Class 1A regional.

Volleyball

St. Joseph-Ogden (22-2) needed to win a third-set tiebreaker to salvage a victory on Tuesday at Stanford Olympia.

The Spartans prevailed 25-20, 23-25, 25-15.

Rylee Walsh had a double-double for SJ-O (16 assists, 11 digs) to lead the team.

Bree Trimble had a team-high 23 digs to go with two aces. Eve Owens also had two aces.

The offensive attack was spearheaded by Katelyn Berry (six kills), Emory Ericksen (four kills) and Lacey Kaiser (four kills).

The Spartans play their regular-season home finale tonight against Monticello and will then finish preparations for a Class 2A regional they will host next week. SJ-O will open on Tuesday against either Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin or Salt Fork.

Oakwood (22-9) followed up on Monday’s title-game win in the Vermilion County Tournament with a victory on Tuesday at Georgetown-Ridge Farm.

Katelyn Young drilled 13 kills in the 25-19, 25-8 title-game win over Armstrong-Potomac (17-13).

Kerrigan Shafer had six kills and Kylie Neuman added three kills to go with two aces.

McKenzie Doan had 20 assists and two aces.

Against the Buffaloes (12-10), Young smashed 15 kills. Doan and Shafer each had six kills. Doan had 22 assists along with two aces.

Alyssa Romito had three kills and Shafer contributed two blocks.

The Comets play their home finale tonight against Schlarman Academy.

Oakwood will also compete in the SJ-O Regional next week and will play a first-round match on Monday against Hoopeston Area.

Heritage split its first two matches of the week.

The Hawks (21-6) opened with a 25-22, 25-19 sweep at home over Judah Christian (8-12) on Monday.

Gracyn Allen led in both digs (10) and kills (seven) while teammates Nicole Cheatham and Fiona Ely each had five digs.

On Tuesday, Tri-County (21-4) dispatched visiting Heritage 25-17, 25-23.

Allen pounded 10 kills for the Hawks. Aliya Holloman added six kills. Allen led with nine digs.
