Heritage/VG, SJO and Oakwood basketball capture wins

The Villa Grove/Heritage boys’ basketball team more than doubled the score on Blue Ridge during the first half of Tuesday’s game in the Cerro Gordo Tournament.

VG/H went on to a 59-41 triumph after leading 42-20 at intermission.

Three players scored in double figures for VG/H.

Will Wilson hit a game-high 17 points. Teammates Jake Eversole and Jared Stevens chipped in with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Tuesday’s game was the season-opener for both schools.

VG/H will play twice on Friday, against Heyworth and against Clinton.

Girls’ basketball

St. Joseph-Ogden

Three players scored in double figures as the Spartans (5-0) dispatched Urbana 55-37 on Tuesday.

Maclayne Taylor led SJ-O with 11 points. Peyton Crowe and Bree Trimble each scored 10 points.

In their home-opener, the Spartans led the visiting Tigers, 16-10, after one quarter.

Oakwood

Paiton Frerichs scored eight of her season-high 15 points in the opening quarter and teammate Kylie Neuman had six during the first eight minutes as the Comets blitzed Judah Christian (1-4), 49-27 on Monday to stay undefeated.

Neuman finished with 14 points and Kaitlyn Young added 11 points. Aubrey Wells hit the team’s only three-pointer.

After one quarter, Oakwood led 20-6.

On Wednesday against Rantoul (3-3), Young hit a game-high 20 points as the undefeated Comets (5-0) topped the Eagles, 51-35.

Frerichs and Neuman each added 11 points.

The Comets will play unbeaten Tri-County in Friday’s 7 p.m. championship game of the Oakwood Comet Classic.

Villa Grove/Heritage

Kyleigh Block, Samantha Campbell and Aliya Holloman each had nine points for the Blue Devils (3-2), who dropped a 39-35 decision to Tuscola (3-1) on Tuesday.
