Stevens reaches 1,000 points in career, Villa Grove/Heritage take third in Cerro Gordo tournament

Senior Jared Stevens scored his 1,000th career point on Friday and a day later earned a spot on the Cerro Gordo all-tournament team after helping Villa Grove/Heritage to a win in the third-place game.
VG/Heritage blitzed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 51-30 in Saturday’s medal round.
Will Wilson had 15 points and Stevens added 14.
On Friday, Villa Grove/Heritage (3-1) split its two games, dropping a 57-45 decision to Heyworth and topping Clinton 56-42.
Against Heyworth, Evan Wilson was the lone double-digit scorer for VG/H with 12 points.
VG/H led, 31-29, at halftime.
Against Clinton, Stevens hit three of his five baskets from three-point range and scored a team-high 15 points. Will Wilson added 11 points.
Stevens was one of five VG/H players with three-pointers against the Maroons.
Villa Grove/Heritage will return to action on Tuesday with a game at Urbana Uni High.
St. Joseph-Ogden
Joel Orcutt scored 17 points for the Spartans (0-1), who dropped their home-opener on Saturday to Champaign Central (3-0), 54-41.
The Spartans were within two points (23-21) at halftime.
Chance Izard and Payton Grimsley each netted three-point baskets for SJ-O, which will return to action on Friday at home against Westville.

Oakwood
In a match-up of unbeaten teams for the championship of the 10-team Oakwood Comet Classic, Tri-County zipped into a 26-8 lead over Oakwood after one quarter and expanded its margin en route to a 70-32 triumph on Friday.
Katelyn Young led the Comets (5-1) with 13 points. Kylie Neuman was next with six points, all from the free throw line.
Tri-County (6-0) hit eight three-point shots and led 43-16 at halftime.
Oakwood won four games in the tournament. The other victories were against opponents that were victorious in the medal round.
Rantoul defeated Westville 48-31 for third place; Judah Christian beat Hoopeston Area 50-46 for fifth place; Blue Ridge topped Urbana Uni High 38-30 for seventh place and Chrisman handled Georgetown-Ridge Farm 38-20 for ninth place.
