Weekend Sports Round-up: SJO girls’ basketball remains undefeated, Heritage boys’ win fourth consecutive game

Four different players hit three-point shots as the undefeated St. Joseph-Ogden girls’ basketball team won games against non-conference foes Danville and Oakwood.

The Spartans (8-0) overpowered visiting Danville on Thursday, 71-48.

SJ-O led by 10 points at halftime and by 21 points after three quarters.

Bree Trimble scored a season-high 20 points and Peyton Crowe added 13 points.

Maclayne Taylor knocked down two three-point shots and Trimble nailed one.

On Saturday, the Spartans expanded a 24-20 halftime margin into a 52-45 triumph over visiting Oakwood.

Trimble led SJ-O with 16 points. Crowe had 15 points and Hannah Dukeman added 13. All three hit a shot from three-point range.

The Spartans will host Mahomet-Seymour at home tonight. Varsity tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m.

Oakwood (6-3) was led by Kaitlyn Young’s game-high 20 points. The output marked her fourth straight 20-point game.

Kylie Neuman added 11 points.

On Thursday, the Comets blitzed visiting Chrisman, 57-14.

Oakwood led 20-2 after one quarter and held the Cardinals scoreless in the third quarter.

Young, who didn’t play in the fourth quarter, hit 11 of her season-high 27 points in the first quarter.

She had 14 more in the third quarter.

Neuman hit 15 points and drained three three-point shots.

Oakwood returns to action tonight at Westville.

Villa Grove/Heritage

Aliya Holloman hit 11 of her season-high 29 points in the first quarter as VG/Heritage toppled visiting Urbana Uni High, 60-32. The Blue Devils led 17-4 after one quarter.

Kyleigh Block scored 13 points.

The Blue Devils made seven three-point shots against the Illineks.

VG/Heritage (6-2) returns to action tonight at Judah Christian.

Boys’ basketball

St. Joseph-Ogden split games on back-to-back nights, giving first-year coach Kiel Duval his first varsity win on Friday, an 81-28 conquest of visiting Westville.

Six Spartans made three-point shots and the team overall was 8-for-19 from three-point range.

Jack Cook tallied a game-high 22 points to lead the Spartans.

Teammates scoring in double figures were Joel Orcutt (13 points) and Chance  Izard (11 points).

On Saturday, SJ-O (1-2) lost at Williamsville, 61-57.

Seven of the Spartans’ baskets came from three-point range. Cook hit three treys en route to a game-high 22 points.

Izard added 11 points and Orcutt scored nine.

Keanen Swanson cleared seven rebounds. Payton Cain had six rebounds and three assists.

The Spartans were 12-for-22 from the free throw line.

SJ-O returns to action Friday at Rantoul.

Oakwood

Trevan Garrett and Andy Hohn each scored in double figures by halftime, helping Oakwood (1-1) reach the .500 mark on Friday with a 71-30 verdict on the road against Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond.

The Comets led by 10 points after one quarter and increased its margin to 29 points at halftime.

Garrett wound up with 18 points and Hohn scored 15.

Zane Priest chipped in with 12 points.

Hohn, Bryce Jones, Priest and Nathan Wright all hit three-point attempts.

Oakwood returns to action on Tuesday at St. Thomas More.

Villa Grove/Heritage

The Blue Devils won their fourth consecutive game on Friday, 62-38 at Danville Schlarman.

Will Wilson led VG/Heritage (5-1) with 21 points. Jared Stevens added 14 points.

None of the team’s 28 baskets were from three-point range.

The Blue Devils led by nine  points at halftime before outscoring the Hilltoppers 17-3 in the third period to take control.

VG/Heritage returns to action on  Saturday at Sullivan.

Wrestling

St. Joseph-Ogden won two of three dual meets on Saturday at home.

The Spartans beat Urbana 60-24 and Danville, also 60-24, but fell to LeRoy/Tri-Valley 58-24.

Six Spartans produced at least one pin for the day, but only A.J. Wagner (106 pounds) and Jake Wendling (120 pounds) had two.

Against Urbana, Isaiah Immke (!38) and Trevon Carr (160) posted pins.

Against LeRoy/TV, Wagner and Wendling had pins.

Against Danville, the SJ-O pins were by Wagner, Wendling, Isaiah Moore (113) and Camden Hesterberg (195).

Oakwood/Salt Fork

The Comets (6-0) topped four opponents on Saturday at the Cumberland Duals.

Oakwood/Salt Fork upended Quincy Notre Dame 62-18, Shelbyville 66-18, Cumberland 53-16 and Effingham 64-18.

In matches wrestled, the Comets had a cumulative 43-10 record, with 19 of the wins by pin.

Five Oakwood/Salt Fork wrestlers compiled 4-0 records for the day and are 6-0 for the season.

Gage Reed (113 pounds) won three of his bouts by pin. Joe Lashuay (120/126) posted pins in three of his four wins. Caleb Lashuay (145/152) had one pin among his four wins. Mason  Ajster (160) recorded pins in two of his four outings and Max Branigin (195) had one pin.

Other teammates with pins were Brian Reagan (3-1 with one pin at 120); Connor Hutson (3-1 with one pin at 132/138); Tate Johnson (3-1 at 170 with three pins); Colby Smiley (3-1 with two pins at 182); and Brennen Lehmkuhl (2-0 with two pins at 285).

Also winning  matches for Oakwood/Salt Fork were Bri Hafner (3-1 at 106); Jacob Paris (3-1 at 132); Isaiah Reeves (1-3 at 138/145); and Caide Borden (2-0 at 285).

Reed has a team-high five pins after six matches.

The Comets return to action on Tuesday at SJ-O in a three-school meet that also includes Clifton Central.
