SJO earns spot in Classic title game, Oakwood to play for third

The pre-tournament seeds worked out to perfection in the Toyota of Danville boys’ basketball classic at St. Joseph-Ogden High School.

The Friday pairings will feature the two 4-0 teams in the round-robin event playing for the championship when the host Spartans take on Cissna Park.

The third-place matchup will be between the two 2-2 entries, Oakwood and Chicago Longwood.

The fifth-place contest will feature the two 0-4 squads, Armstrong-Potomac and Schlarman Academy.

SJ-O earned a shot at the title by virtue of Tuesday’s 68-29 thrashing of A-P.

Jack Cook scored 16 points, Chance Izard had 15 and Joel Orcutt chipped with 13 for the Spartans (6-4 overall).

Izard and Payton Grimsley hit three-point shots for SJ-O.

Oakwood

The Comets (7-3 overall) dropped a 53-23 decision to Cissna Park.

Trevan Garrett had eight points and Zane Priest six points for Oakwood.

Cissna Park led, 10-3, after one quarter and 20-12 at halftime.

Villa Grove/Heritage

Three players scored in double figures, but Villa Grove/Heritage suffered a 76-55 loss to St. Thomas More on Tuesday.

Will Wilson scored 16 points, Evan Wilson had 15 points and Jared Stevens had 12 points for VG/H (8-3).

St. Thomas More led, 13-12, after one quarter and 40-28 at halftime. STM nailed seven three-point shots.

For VG/H, the lone three-pointer was hit by Gavyn Reinhart.

Girls’ basketball

St. Joseph-Ogden hit 12 of 13 free throws en route to a 58-43 win over St. Thomas More on Monday.

Ahead 37-35 after three quarters, the Spartans (11-1) nailed 6 of 6 fourth-quarter free throws to secure the win.

Peyton Crowe and Bree Trimble each hit seven-points in the final stanza.

Crowe scored a team-high 19 points. Trimble had 17 and Maclayne Taylor netted 11.

SJ-O led, 21-11, after one quarter. Trimble had eight of her points and Crowe had seven of hers in the opening frame.

SJ-O returns to action on Saturday at Morton.

Oakwood

Kaitlyn Young scored all 11 of her points in the opening quarter, sparking the Comets to a 24-2 lead after eight minutes.

Oakwood posted a 52-23 win over visiting Armstrong-Potomac on Monday.

Kylie Neuman scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the third quarter.

Oakwood, which netted 8 of 10 free throws, is 11-3 and has a five-game winning streak.
