SJO and Oakwood suffer end of week losses

Boys basketball teams from St. Joseph-Ogden and Oakwood both suffered losses on Friday in final-day action of the Toyota of Danville Classic at SJ-O.

In the championship game, Cissna Park topped the Spartans 66-37.

It was the second win for the Timberwolves (9-0) over SJ-O (6-5) this month.

Joel Orcutt scored 12 points and Jack Cook had 10 for SJ-O. Keanen Swanson added eight points.

Orcutt cleared a team-high four rebounds. Both Swanson and Payton Cain finished with three assists.

SJ-O returns to action on Wednesday in the Small School bracket of the State Farm  Classic, playing Rockford Lutheran at 8 p.m.

In the third-place game at SJ-O, Chicago Longwood handed Oakwood a 54-43 setback.

Longwood built a 17-8 lead after the first period.

Zane Priest scored eight of his 14 points in the final stanza for the Comets (7-4).

Bryce Jones scored 12 points and Noah Ruch had eight points.

Oakwood returns to action on Wednesday with two games in the Monticello Hoopla Tournament, facing the host Sages at 11:30 a.m. and Ridgeview at 6 p.m.

In the fifth-place game at SJ-O, Schlarman Academy defeated Armstrong-Potomac, 58-50.

Girls’ basketball

Bree Trimble was the lone SJ-O player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points, on Saturday as the Spartans dropped a 71-34 decision at Morton.

Morton is ranked fourth in the state in Class 3A. SJ-O is ranked sixth in Class 2A.

Morton led, 20-6, after one quarter and 39-16 at halftime.

Peyton Crowe scored eight points and Maclayne Taylor had seven for the Spartans.

SJ-O returns to action on Wednesday in the Small School bracket of the State Farm Classic, drawing Peoria Christian in a 5 p.m. game.
