Top-Seeded SJO Girls’ Basketball dominates Peoria Christian

The top-seeded St. Joseph-Ogden girls’ basketball team scored enough points in the first quarter on Wednesday to overpower Peoria Christian 80-10 in a first-round game of the 40th State Farm Classic at Normal Community High School.
SJ-O (12-2) scored 23 first-quarter points and built an 18-point lead that grew to 41 points at halftime.
Bree Trimble led the Spartans with 21 points. Teammate Payton Jacobs scored a season-high 10 points.
SJ-O hit 7 of 11 free throws and limited Peoria Christian to four field goals overall and no points in the final quarter.
SJ-O returns to action today at 4 p.m. against Camp Point Central. The winner will advance into a Friday semifinal game.
Oakwood
Kaitlyn Young scored 21 of her team’s points, but the Comets (12-4) dropped a 50-38 first-round decision to Camp Point Central in the State Farm Classic.
Kylie Neuman added seven points for Oakwood.
Camp Point, the No. 8 seed, built an 18-12 lead after one quarter against the No. 9-seeded Comets.
Oakwood returns to action at 2 p.m. today against Peoria Christian.
Boys’ basketball
Oakwood
Oakwood couldn’t overcome a slow start and suffered a 35-32 loss to the host school in first-round action of Monticello’s Hoopla Classic on Wednesday.
Monticello built an 11-4 lead after the first quarter, but Oakwood held a 28-24 lead during the final three periods.
Six of Oakwood’s 10 field goals came from three-point range.
Bryce Jones led the Comets with 13 points and three three-pointers.
Monticello managed just three second-half baskets.
In their Wednesday nightcap, the Comets (7-6) dropped a 53-52 overtime decision to Ridgeview.
Ridgeview held a seven-point halftime lead (30-23), but the Comets forced OT thanks to a 15-point fourth quarter. Jones scored eight of his team-high four points in the fourth period.
Jones drilled four three-point shots in the game.
In the OT session, the lone Comet to score was Zane Priest. He hit four of his 12 points in the extra period.
Trevan Garrett added 10 points for Oakwood.
The Comets return to action today against Paxton-Buckley-Loda (7-3) at 2 p.m., trying to snap a four-game losing streak. PBL won both of its Wednesday games, defeating both Ridgeview and Monticello.
St. Joseph-Ogden
The eighth-seeded Spartans dropped a narrow 64-61 decision to ninth-seeded Rockford Lutheran in a first-round game of the State Farm Classic on Wednesday at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center.
Rockford led, 25-19, after one quarter. Over the next three quarters, SJ-O held a 42-39 edge, but couldn’t salvage a victory.
Jack Cook hit a team-high 27 points for the Spartans.
Chance Izard and Joel Orcutt each had 13 points. Izard drained three three-point shots.
The Spartans (6-6) return to action today in a 2 p.m. game at Normal West High School against Peoria Christian and will try to break a two-game losing streak.
