Comet baseball snaps losing streak, Young finishes first in shot put

The Comets snapped a three-game losing streak on Thursday, winning at Villa Grove/Heritage, 3-1.

Isaiah Ruch hit a home run for the second consecutive game and also struck out six in 6 1/3 innings pitched to pick up the win.

Josh Young recorded the last two outs to earn a save.

Elijah Harden and Cayden Wells each had two hits for Oakwood, which managed six hits overall. Harden had an RBI.

The Comets broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning on Ruch’s two-run homer.

Oakwood (3-4) returns to action today at Hoopeston Area.

Boys Track and Field

The Comets ended fourth in a four-team meet Thursday at Tuscola, scoring 16 points.

Three Oakwood athletes finished as the runner-up in their events: Camryn Taylor (400 meters, 55.11 seconds); Cameron Helka (800 meters, 2:08.78) and Vermillion (3,200 meters, 1:28.67).

Oakwood returns to action on Tuesday at the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Invitational.

Girls Track and Field

Katelyn Young captured top honors in the shot put (40 feet, 1/2 inch) on Thursday for the Comets, who placed fourth in a four-team meet at Tuscola.

Oakwood had 23 points.

The Comets also had a victory from its 800-meter relay foursome (1:59.87).

Individually, Davis was the runner-up in the 800 meters (2:40.85) and the 1,600 meters (6:21.81).
