Heritage runners Herbrandt and Campbell finish first
Nick Coffin (run scored) and Mason Wyant (an RBI) each had two hits for the Hawks (4-5), who dropped a 3-1 non-conference decision at home to Oakwood on Thursday.
VG/Heritage created a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Evan Wilson allowed three hits in five innings and registered five strikeouts.
Nathan Chewning worked the final two innings and took the loss.
Boys’ track and field
Trevor Reberger (200 meters), Andrew McQueen (110 high hurdles) and Will Wilson (high jump) placed second in their events on Thursday, helping VG/Heritage to a third-place team finish in a four-school meet at Tuscola.
Salt Fork (109 points) was the winner, followed by Tuscola (82) and VG/Heritage (42).
Reberger was timed in 23.62 seconds. McQueen’s time was 18.89 seconds. Wilson cleared 5 feet.
VG/Heritage also had second-place performances from its 400- and 800-meter relays.
Wilson placed third in the 800 meters (2:26.30).
VG/Heritage returns to action on Friday at the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Invitational.
Girls’ track and field
Meike Herbrandt and Samantha Campbell each won events on Thursday at Tuscola as VG/Heritage took third in a four-team meet.
Tuscola was the meet champion with 86 points. Salt Fork had 74, followed by VG/Heritage with 45.
Campbell won both the 800 meters (2:30.88) and the 1,600 meters (6:04.93).
Herbrandt took the 200 meters (27.61) and was the runner-up in the 100 meters (12.98 seconds) and the long jump (15 feet, 6 1/4 inches).
Liberty Floyd placed third in the high jump (4-8).
The Blue Devils’ 400- and 3,200-meter relays each ended second.
