Spartan softball remains unbeaten, McCune finishes as runner-up at Rantoul Invite

St. Joseph-Ogden’s Isiah McCune was the runner-up in the 3,200-meter race in Saturday’s boys’ track and field Rantoul Invitational.
He was timed in 10 minutes, 9.96 seconds.
The other Spartan to place among the top three was 200-meter sprinter Lane Gaskin.
He was third in 22.87 seconds.
Chicago Heights Bloom was the meet champion with 111 points. SJ-O placed seventh in the 15-school event with 55 points.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday at Champaign Central.
Baseball
The Spartans posted a win and a no-decision on Saturday at Williamsville.
In the first game, SJ-O handled Tremont, 11-1.
Blake Primmer knocked in three runs for the Spartans and teammate Adam Frerichs had two hits.
Keegan McCarty earned the pitching win. He struck out three and yielded six hits.
SJ-O scored the only runs it needed in the top of the first inning, plating two runs.
The second game, against host Williamsville, ended in a 2-2 tie after eight innings, due to darkness.
Crayton Burnett struck out six and permitted five hits.
The Spartans managed just three hits in the game, but created the tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning.
SJ-O returns to action today at home against Rantoul.
Softball
Zoey Witruk pitched a four-hitter and struck out 14 batters on Saturday as unbeaten St. Joseph-Ogden posted a 3-1 win over Tri-Valley in Downs.
Katie Poulter and Hannah Dukeman each had two hits for the Spartans (9-0). One of Poulter’s hits was a home run. Kaylee Ward also drove in a run.
SJ-O returns to action today at home against Rantoul.
