Heritage baseball tops Oblong, relay teams finish strong at Caitlin

Villa Grove/Heritage averted a shutout by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Monday, but they couldn’t overcome their deficit and dropped an 8-3 decision in baseball to Cumberland.

Keagan Patterson had both of the Hawks’ hits. Ryan Cheatham had two RBI for VG/Heritage.

Evan Wilson struck out nine in six innings pitched, but suffered the loss.

On Wednesday, Patterson pitched a three-hitter and also swatted three hits as the Hawks won at home, 12-2, over Oblong.

He stuck out 10 and walked three in his five-inning stint.

Patterson had half of his team’s hits and also knocked in three runs. Cheatham also had three RBI and scored three runs.

The Hawks (9-6) return to action today at Fisher. VG/Heritage has won five of its last six games.

Boys’ track and field

The Villa Grove/Heritage Blue Devils scored 73 points and ended in third place in Tuesday’s eight-team meet at Catlin.

The Blue Devils got a runner-up finish from their 3,200-meter relay (10:55.61) and a third-place run from their 800-meter relay unit (1:44.90).

The distance relay runners were Kale Barrett, Kaleb Miller, Caleb Wiessing, and Nick Orndorff.

Members of the 800 relay were Ierik Sorenson, Trevor Reberger, Robbie Wicklander and Sam Reno.

VG/Heritage had both the fourth- and fifth-place 400-meter relays.

The first group (timed in 49.72), consisted of Kehm Shirley, Reberger, Wicklander and Reno.

The second unit, timed in 50.30 included Liam Barr, Ashton Harrison, Konner Pearman and Isaac Mahoe.

Individually, Will Wilson scored points in three events.

He was fourth in the long jump (16-8 1/4), fifth in the high jump (5-4) and sixth in the 400 meters (56.96).

Shirley placed in two individual events, finishing sixth in the triple jump (32-7 3/4) and seventh in the 100 meters (12.68).

Hurdler Andrew McQueen was also a double placer.

He ended fourth in the 300 event (50.29) and eighth in the 110s (18.82).

Two other Blue Devils scored points in the long jump. Harrison was seventh (16-7) and Elijah Kiesel was eighth (16-6).

VG/Heritage had three point-scorers in the shot put and two in the discus.

Chase Burwell was fourth in the shot (43-0), Zayzen Price was fifth (39-2) and Daelin Price was sixth (37-9).

In the discus, Zayzen Price was fourth (110-10) and Daelin Price was fifth (108-4).

Girls’ track and field

The Blue Devils placed sixth in Tuesday’s eight-school meet at Catlin.

VG/Heritage had 54 points.

Liberty Floyd won the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches).

Teammate Meike Herbrandt collected third-place finishes in three events: 100 meters (13.49 seconds), 400 meters (1:06.03) and long jump (14-11 1/2).

Also placing third was the VG/Heritage 400-meter relay (54.89 seconds).

Relay runners were Herbrandt, Floyd,, Kirsten Foreman and Samantha Campbell.

Two other relays also scored points.

The 3,200 foursome was fourth with Regan Blanton, Katherine Eisenmenger, Sophia Wegeng and Isabella Caceres sharing the baton.

The 800 unit took fifth. The runners were Irene Bruschi, Manuela Pedersoil, Hannah Ison and Julia Prevtali.

Ava Vollmer was fifth in the shot put (27-1) and Wegeng was eighth in the triple jump (24-6).

Heritage

The Hawks (3-9) suffered a 15-1 setback on Monday at Cumberland and a 9-2 loss to visiting Hoopeston Area on Tuesday.

Heritage returns to action today at home against Westville.
