Katelyn Young placed third in the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, 1/2 inch.

Boys’ basketball

Buzzer-beating baskets are always a highlight for players and fans alike, but in all-star games they often take on added significance.

The ninth-annual Battle of the Border assigns two points to each team winning a quarter during a two-game series between high school standouts from eastern Illinois and western Indiana.

In Saturday’s second game of the boys’ series, the Illinois boys won the first quarter, 23-22, thanks to a 16-foot shot from the left baseline by Oakwood’s Trevan Garrett, a shot that he released with one second showing on the clock in the opening period at Bismarck-Henning High School.

All eight of Garrett’s points proved vital as the Illinois team held on for an 83-82 triumph to sweep the two-game series.

Garrett also grabbed four rebounds to lead the Illinois squad to a 42-38 edge on the boards.

On Sunday, Garrett was again on the winning team again as Team Gold defeated Team Black 63-58 in The News-Gazette All-Star game at Parkland College.

The 6-foot-3 Garrett scored five points and hit a three-point shot.

Girls’ basketball

Oakwood’s Kylie Neuman scored five points for Team Gold, which rallied from a double-figure halftime deficit on Sunday at Parkland College to edge Team Black 45-43 in The News-Gazette All-star game.

Neuman was one of two players on her team to make a three-point shot.
