Comet football looking ahead to conference games, Tevebaugh scores hat trick against Schlarman Academy

For the second time in the last three weeks, Oakwood shut out its football opponent while maintaining its prolific offensive output.
The Comets (4-1) went to Gilman on Friday and blanked Iroquois West in a non-conference contest, 41-0. The Comets are averaging 47 points per game and have amassed 33 touchdowns in five games.
Oakwood is within one win of becoming playoff-eligible for the season.
The Comets held a 6-0 halftime lead thanks to an 8-yard pass from Rhett Harrison to Kade Anderson.
The lead was only 13-0 entering the fourth quarter when Oakwood added four more touchdowns, including a 95-yard interception return by Jack Carey.
Carey scored two TDs. His other one was on a 43-yard pass from Harrison.
Blaine McCord also reached the end zone twice. Gaven Clouse had a TD scamper on a 63-yard run.
Joe Lashuay converted extra-point kicks after the team’s final five scores.
“Hard-fought game for us,” Oakwood coach Al Craig said. “We came out in the second half and played much better after a slow start.
“Our defense has really played well the last four weeks (allowing 19 total points since Week 1). We are excited to get into conference play next week.”
The Comets return to action on Friday at home against Georgetown-Ridge Farm (1-4).
Oakwood has won its only Vermilion Valley Conference game, but will finish the regular season with four consecutive league games. The first three in that sequence will be played at home.
Oakwood Girls’ cross-country
Grace Davis finished in the upper one-third of runners in Saturday’s Spartan Classic.
Out of 147 finishers, Davis placed 49th with a 3-mile time of 20 minutes, 42.82 seconds.
The Comets had just three entries in the girls’ race and were not scored as a team.
The other Oakwood competitors were Allie Morris (81st in 22:23.16) and Katie Fritz (107th in 23:41.5).
The Comets return to action on Tuesday against Chrisman, La Salette and Tri-County.
Oakwood Boys’ cross-country
Two Oakwood athletes participated in Saturday’s Spartan Classic cross-country street race.
Ethan Brewer finished in169th place with a 3-mile time of 21 minutes, 6.98 seconds.
Teammate Bryce Tucker was 186th with a time of 24:04.83.
Oakwood’s next meet is on Tuesday against Chrisman, La Salette and Tri-County.
Oakwood Volleyball
The Comets maintained their undefeated mark in Vermilion Valley Conference play on Thursday, overpowering Salt Fork at home, 25-21, 25-15.
Aaliyah Denius led the way with seven kills, two aces and two blocks.
Katelyn Young had seven assists and five kills.
Karsen Rupp also had seven assists to go with four kills and two service aces.
Oakwood is 5-0 in VVC play and 10-9 overall.
The team returns to action tonight at Paxton-Buckley-Loda.
Oakwood Golf
Logen Hoshauer was the medalist on Thursday at Turtle Run, in Danville, as the Comets dispatched Salt Fork in a dual meet 196-219.
Hoshauer fired a 40 and was victorious by seven strokes over teammate Reed Sperry and Salt Fork’s Brody Althaus.
Other Oakwood scores: Travis Goodner (52), Kyle McFarland (57), Lily Harden (62), Joie Sollers (62) and Seth Halls (64).
The Comets return to action today against Hoopeston Area at Hubbard Trail.
Oakwood Soccer
Brady Tevebaugh had a hat trick and the Comets registered their fourth shutout on Thursday, blanking visiting Schlarman Academy 6-0.
Tevebaugh scored two of his three goals in the opening half, staking Oakwood/Salt Fork to a 4-0 lead at intermission.
Joe Lashuay, Colin Merritt and Kalie Tison also had goals for the Comets.
Merritt delivered two assists. Other teammates helping with goal-scorers were Carlie Thompson, Matthew Crawford, Lashuay and Grant Powell.
Aaron Dean recorded four saves.
Oakwood/Salt Fork (5-9-1) returns to action on Tuesday at Hoopeston Area. Oakwood/Salt Fork is 3-2 in Vermilion Valley Conference matches.
