Hoshauer qualifies for sectional tournament, Young leads Comets to two wins

One Oakwood golfer qualified for next Monday’s Class 1A sectional tournament at El Paso and another just missed advancing.

In a Class 1A regional on Monday at Harrison Park, in Danville, junior Logen Hoshauer carded an 88 and tied for eighth place individually.

He will move on to the sectional.

Teammate Travis Goodner carded a 94 and ended in a three-way tie for the final individual sectional berth. He lost in a three-hole playoff.

Other Oakwood scores at regional were: Reed Sperry (95), Kyle McFarland (112) and Seth Halls (140).

The Comets finished fifth in the team standings with a combined score of 389. Meet champion Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley teamed up for a 342 composite.

Oakwood Girls’ cross-country

Oakwood/Salt Fork’s Grace Davis was the individual winner on Tuesday in a three-school meet at Kickapoo State Park.

Davis’ winning 3-mile time was 21 minutes, 58 seconds.

Oakwood/Salt Fork ran against Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin and Armstrong-Potomac in the non-scored meet.

Two other Comets finished among the top five.

Cassie Fugate was fourth in 27:16. Katie Fritz was fifth in 29:00.

Oakwood/Salt Fork returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Vermilion Valley Conference meet.

Oakwood Volleyball

The Comets (14-11) opened the week with back-to-back wins on consecutive nights.

On Monday at home, Oakwood defeated Judah Christian 25-20, 25-9.

Katelyn Young put up 10 kills, six assists and four blocks.

Karsen Rupp had nine assists and Aaliyah Denius landed six kills.

Ashlynn Pinnick (four aces) and Alyssa Romito (three aces) were the catalysts in a strong serving match.

On Tuesday, the Comets returned to Vermilion Valley Conference action at Hoopeston and dealt the Cornjerkers a 25-16, 19-25, 25-23 loss.

Young (eight kills), Romito (six kills) and Denius (four kills) were the offensive catalysts.

Rupp had 11 assists and Young handed out seven assists.

Denius, Romito, Young and Madison Doan all served two aces.

Young led all players with two blocks.

Oakwood is 7-1 in VVC matches and returns to action tonight at Salt Fork.

Oakwood Soccer

The Comets wrapped up the regular season on Tuesday with a 1-0 shutout over visiting Georgetown-Ridge Farm.

The lone goal came in the second half when Brady Tevebaugh assisted Colin Merritt.

Goalkeeper Austiin Dean recorded one save.

On Monday, Oakwood lost at St. Thomas More, 9-0.

Oakwood/Salt Fork (6-13-1) starts into postseason play on Saturday with a rematch against the Buffaloes.

The Class 1A regional matchup will start at 10 a.m. at Oakwood Grade School. The winner advances into a Tuesday semifinal match at Tolono Unity.

Tevebaugh and Merritt are the Comets’ top scorers this fall. Tevabaugh has 14 goals and five assists. Merritt has eight goals and eight assists.

Dean has 64 saves to date.
