Oakwood girls’ cross country takes Vermilion Valley Conference champions, Young and Rupp reach milestone

Led by individual champion Grace Davis, the Oakwood/Salt Fork girls’ cross-country team repeated as Vermilion Valley Conference champions on Tuesday at Kickapoo State Park.

Davis was timed in 21 minutes, 52 seconds for the 3-mile course. She finished 20 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Two teammates also earned all-conference accolades for placing among the top seven individuals.

Allie Morris was third in 23:35 and Cassie Fugate was seventh in 25:36.

The Comets won team honors with 22 points. Georgetown Ridge Farm/Chrisman was second with 33 points.

Oakwood’s other competitors were Katie Fritz (eighth in 25:41) and Aubrey Wells (13th in 31:35).

The Comets return to action on Tuesday in the Vermilion County Meet, which will also be held at Kickapoo

Oakwood Boys’ cross-country

Two Oakwood/Salt Fork runners placed among the top 25 in Tuesday’s Vermilion Valley Conference meet at Kickapoo State Park.

Ethan Brewer ended 15th with a 3-mile time of 21 minutes, 33 seconds. Teammate Bryce Tucker was 21st in 26:14.

The Comets return to action on Tuesday in the Vermilion County Meet, which will also be held at Kickapoo.

Oakwood Volleyball

Oakwood scored a straight-set sweep at home over Chrisman on Tuesday as Katelyn Young eclipsed the 200-mark for kills this season and Karsen Rupp reached the 200-mark for assists.

The Comets (16-11) have won 10 of their last 12 matches following a 25-14, 28-26 verdict over the Cardinals.

Young delivered nine kills and has 208 for the season. She also had seven assists, three blocks and two aces.

Rupp distributed nine assists, raising her season total to 204.

Aaliyah Denius chipped in with five kills.

Oakwood returns to action tonight at Westville. The Comets are 9-1 in Vermilion Valley Conference matches.

Oakwood Girls’ golf

Senior Joie Sollers shots rounds of 54 and 58 on Monday at the Jacksonville Class 1A Sectional.

With her score of 112, she did not qualify for the state meet.

Sollers was the Comets’ lone participant at the sectional.

Oakwood Boys’ golf

Junior Logen Hoshauer carded an 89 on Monday at El Paso Golf Course, but fell seven shots away from securing a berth at the state golf tournament.

His sectional round consisted of a 44 and a 45.

He was the team’s lone sectional competitor.

Oakwood Soccer

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin ended the Oakwood/Salt Fork season on Tuesday in the Class 1A regional semifinals at Unity High School.

The Comets, who were shut out nine times this season, conclude the year with a record of 7-14-1.
