Oakwood bounced back from a three-set loss in Monday’s championship match of the Vermilion County Volleyball Tournament to post a three-set triumph in Tuesday’s Senior Match at Fithian.

The Comets fended off the Georgetown-Ridge Farm Buffaloes 27-25, 23-25, 25-18 thanks to a double-double from Katelyn Young and six kills by Alyssa Romito. Young and Romito are the team’s lone seniors.

Young’s performance included match-high totals of 16 kills and 15 assists as well as two blocks and two service aces.

Aaliyah Denius chipped in with seven kills, two blocks and two aces.

Karsen Rupp delivered 13 assists for Oakwood. Teammates Ashlynn Pinnick (two aces) and Addie Wright (two blocks) were other key contributors.

On Monday at Bismarck, the host school ended Oakwood’s string of consecutive County championships at four by fighting back from a one-set deficit, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15.

Young swatted 15 of the Comets’ 26 kills in the tournament finals.

Oakwood returns to action tonight at Danville against Schlarman Academy and can clinch at least a share of the Vermilion Valley Conference crown with a win.

Oakwood and Milford are each 11-1 in conference play. Milford faces Hoopeston Area tonight.

Oakwood is 20-12 overall, marking the school’s third 20-win season in a row. That feat has occurred just twice in school history.
