Oakwood Girls’ Basketball emerges as Consolation Bracket Champions, boys’ basketball results from Monticello

The Comets won their last three games in the State Farm Classic and emerged as the consolation bracket champions.
After a 51-43 loss to Annawan in the first round, Oakwood ended the calendar year with a three-game winning streak.
The team defeated El Paso/Gridley 36-34, Rockford Lutheran 42-34 and Camp Point Central 35-19 in the consolation finals on Saturday at Bloomington High School.
All of the Oakwood games – except for the loss – were played at Bloomington. The game against Annawan was held at Normal Community High School.
Against Annawan, Katelyn Young scored 14 of her 29 points in the third quarter, helping the Comets trim a halftime deficit of 31-15 to 34-31 entering the last stanza.
For the game, Young connected on 9 of 13 free throws.
Oakwood regrouped to drop El Paso/Gridley, limiting its opponent to three first-half field goals. Young scored 12 of her team-high 21 points in the second half.
Aaliyah Denius scored six points and Addie Wright totaled five points.
In the consolation semifinals, Young tallied eight first-quarter points as the Comets jumped into an 11-6 lead over Rockford Lutheran.
She ended with 18 points. Oakwood clinched the win by hitting 5 of 6 fourth-quarter free throws.
Denius tallied 12 points and Wright ended with six points.
Against Camp Point, Young registered 12 points and Aubrey Wells posted a season-high 11 points in the victory.
Young made eight of her points in the opening quarter, leading the Comets to a 12-7 advantage after eight minutes.
Mikayla Cox also reached a season’s high, with nine points.
Camp Point managed only three first-half field goals and trailed, 20-9 at intermission. Camp Point was the fifth school to score less than 20 points against the Comets’ defense this season.
Oakwood (14-4) returns to action on Monday (Jan 6) at Armstrong-Potomac.
Oakwood Boys’ basketball
The Comets (7-8) snapped a three-game losing streak in the seventh-place game of Monticello’s Hoopla Tournament on Saturday.
Oakwood ended the event with a 55-52 conquest of Clinton.
Brevin Wells had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win. Isiah Ruch notched 10 points and Jackson Powell finished with nine points and two steals.
Kade Anderson pulled down six rebounds and Josh Young totaled two steals.
Earlier in the tournament, Oakwood lost to Monticello 56-38, to Tuscola 63-40 and to Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, 65-46.
Against Monticello, Young had 11 points and Powell ended with 10. Wells and Anderson each had three assists. Wells and Young had three steals apiece.
Against Tuscola, Elijah Harden and Young shared scoring honors with 10 points apiece. Powell registered six points.
Nathan Wright grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Anderson had four rebounds and Young had two assists.
Against GCMS, Wells dropped in five three-point shots on the way to a 17-point game. Ruch notched nine points and Young posted seven.
Young and Jayden Cox each cleared seven rebounds. Powell handled six rebounds. Anderson led with three assists.
Oakwood returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 7) at Georgetown-Ridge Farm.
