Making masks is the best way for Sherrie Davis to give back

Sherrie Davis just wants to do her part.

When word of a mask shortage came, she knew that her time at home coupled with the fabric she had could help fill the gap locally.

“I had a lot of material from projects I’ve done for my granddaughter,” she said. “I’m just trying to give back something for the cause.”

The only thing Davis did not have was elastic.

A friend had realized there might be a need before it was stated and purchased elastic on Etsy. Brogan let Davis get a head start on masks by sharing the elastic.

“But everything else, I just have tons and tons of stuff left,” Davis said. “I’m not one to throw away stuff.”

Working 12 to 14 hour days, Davis has been able to produce about 70 masks.

Two batches have already gone out, and she is assembling approximately another 40 this week.

Davis wants to target people “on the front lines” with the masks: hospitals, grocery store clerks, food delivery, people in nursing homes, elderly or those who care for those who are at risk. Her goal is to get the masks to people who doing work that increases their exposure to COVID-19.

Davis gave some to a women who has two daughters who are nurses, then a couple to a man whose father has health issues.

“I need to know that they’re going to people who really need them,” she said.
