Illinois Secretary of State facilities to begin reopening June 1

Illinois Secretary of State facilities will begin reopening for business on June 1 with a focus on new drivers, those with expired driver’s licenses or ID cards and vehicle transactions for the first two months.

Beginning June 1 facilities in Chicago North, Chicago South and Chicago West will open on Mondays from 7:30 to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday through Saturday facilities in suburban Chicago and statewide facilities will open on June 2.  Central Illinois facilities will be open from Tuesday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to noon until July 31.

For all other services, please refer to the various departments listed on Cyber Drive Illinois. “Throughout this pandemic, my commitment has been to do everything we can to help protect the health and safety of our residents and my employees, while providing services to the people of Illinois,” said Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. “This reopening plan adheres to this commitment.”

The Secretary of State  extended expiration dates by at least 90 days after the governor’s June 1 disaster proclamation executive order ends. This extension will ensure driver’s licenses, ID cards and vehicle registrations remain valid and will help alleviate the initial rush of customers visiting the reopened facilities.

Online services can be accessed online at https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/. There Illinoisans can:

  • renewing a vehicle registration;
  • obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card;
  • obtaining a driving record abstract;
  • renewing a driver’s license through the Safe Driver Renewal program.

Since March 17, through online services, the office has issued more than 775,000 vehicle registration stickers, 350,000 titles and 200,000 driver’s licenses/IDs.

The federal government extended the REAL ID deadline by one year until October 1, 2021. People with valid U.S. passports are encouraged to consider delaying their visit to a facility to apply for a REAL ID until their driver’s license is near its expiration date.
