I-74 to be reduced to one way near St. Joseph as bridge work begins July 14
The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that repairs to two bridges on Interstate 74 in Champaign County begin July 14.
The work is on the bridges that carry I-74 over Union Pacific railroad tracks just east of St. Joseph and will reduce the interstate to one lane in each direction. Traffic will be controlled with drums and concrete barriers, and message boards will be in place to inform motorists. Construction is expected to be complete by early November.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
