The Comets opened their season on Thursday (Aug. 20) with a 12-2 victory at home over Schlarman Academy.
Bella Bradford pitched all six innings and held the Hilltoppers scoreless until the fifth inning. She yielded five hits and walked two while striking out seven.
Her teammates gave her a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Samantha Dunavon was 3-for-4. Teammates with two hits were Mikayla Whaling, Karleigh Nelson and Sophia Hart. In all, Oakwood smashed 12 hits.
“I was impressed all the way around,” said the team’s first-year coach, Dave Markwell. “We played well and hit the ball well.
“I was pleased by the effort of the whole team.”
Markwell acknowledged that he was unsure what to expect.
“You’re always nervous for the first game, wondering if you’ve covered everything you should have covered,” he said. “The kids responded well.”
In the junior varsity game, Oakwood topped Schlarman 7-1.
Oakwood returns to action on Thursday (Aug. 27) at Gifford.
