SJ-O Junior Clare Huffman gets win over Urbana opponent

Junior Clare Huffman registered a straight-set win on Tuesday (Sept. 29) at Urbana, accounting for the lone St. Joseph-Ogden triumph in an 8-1 dual-meet loss to the Tigers at Blair Park.
At No. 4 singles Huffman topped Eisla Madigan 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 5 singles, Spartan Emily Fisher suffered a narrow loss to Daniella Coleman 7-6, 6-4.
Another tough loss for SJ-O came at No. 3 doubles where Flannery McCorkel and Grace Schmitz dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to the Tigers’ Hannah Null and Jacie Owens.
On Monday (Sept. 21), SJ-O lost a 9-0 decision to Bloomington Central Catholic.
In singles, Hope Rajlich, at No. 2, and Huffman, at No. 4, each won three games before dropping straight-set decisions.
In doubles, the No. 2 unit of Schmitz and Emma Rydell won four games, but lost their match in straight sets.
“The girls continue to improve with each match,” SJ-O coach Kevin Martlage said.
The Spartans (0-3) return to action on Friday (Oct. 2) at Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.
