Jacob Kern advances to IHSA Sectional match

Sophomore Jacob Kern shot an 88 on Tuesday (Oct. 6) and tied for fourth individually in the Danville Schlarman Class 1A boys’ regional golf tournament at Harrison Park.

Kern had rounds of 47 and 41.

On his third-from-last hole, Kern drained a shot from more than 90 yards on No. 16, which was critical in his advancement.

He was one of four individuals to qualify for the Tuscola Sectional, which will be held on Tuesday (Oct. 13) at Ironwood.

Nine schools entered full teams at the regional. SJ-O placed fourth with a composite score of 394.

Regional champion Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin (377) and runner-up Champaign St. Thomas More (378) qualified their entire teams for the sectional.

Schlarman placed third with a 379.

In a field of 58 competitors, the Spartans had two other individuals place among the top 14.

Ty Pence was 11th with a 93 and McGuire Atwood was 14th with a 96.

The other SJ-O competitors were Connor Hale (117) and Jack Robertson (118).

The Spartans matched their top 18-hole score of the season. Kern and Atwood posted season-best scores and Pence matched his top 18-hole round.
