By Fred Kroner

Thanks to placing three runners among the top four finishers, the Comets edged Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin for team supremacy on Tuesday (Oct. 13) in the Vermilion Valley Conference girls’ cross-country meet at Kickapoo State Park.

Oakwood/Salt Fork finished with a composite score of 27 points. Runner-up B-H/R-A had 30 points. They were the only programs that fielded full teams.

Freshman Macie Russell led a trio of Oakwood/Salt Fork runners to the finish line.

Russell, the individual runner-up, completed the 3-mile course in 20 minutes, 53.15 seconds.

Teammates trailing her were Allie Morris (third in 21:23.49) and Mackenzie Russell (fourth in 22:14.04).

The Russells and Morris earned all-conference honors as did all other runners who placed among the top seven individually.

Other participants for the Comets were: Shelby McGee (17th in 26:49.63), Kalie Tison (18th in 27:29.66), Yelka Layden (20th in 28:01.70), Cassie Fugate (21st in 28:13.66) and Aaliyah Denius (23rd in 28:42.60).

Oakwood/Salt Fork will return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 20) in the Vermilion County meet, which will also be held at Kickapoo.
