Spartans’ first tennis season comes to an end

Two of the Spartans’ four entries won matches in the Champaign Central Class 1A girls’ tennis sectional tournament which ended on Saturday (Oct. 17) at the Lindsay Courts.

In singles, Hope Rajlich started the postseason with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over an entry from Mahomet-Seymour. Rajlich was eliminated in the next round, 6-1, 6-1 by an entry from Mount Zion.

The other SJ-O singles competitor, Claire Huffman, suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to a different entry from Mount Zion.

In doubles, Allison Kearney and Katie McDermott registered a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 triumph over an entry from Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley to start the postseason. In the next round, they dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to an entry from Urbana Uni High.

The Spartans’ other doubles duo, Abbey Dow and Grace Schmitz, lost a 6-3, 6-0 decision to a different entry from GCMS.

SJ-O, in its first season offering tennis, finished in a tie for eighth-place in the 12-school sectional, with four points.

Meet champion St. Thomas More had 28 points and was followed by Maroa-Forsyth (19), Central (14), Mount Zion (12), Mahomet-Seymour (8) and Urbana (8).

The sectional tournament was the season’s final tennis event for all IHSA schools.
