To Grandmother’s House We Go to feature crafts and Patriotic Civil War Santa

The Museum of the Grand Prairie will offer their annual “To Grandmother’s House We Go” event virtually on Dec. 5.

The popular event will feature the Museum decorated for the holidays while guests learn about classic and old-fashioned Christmas crafts and activities.

Christmas’ most popular star, Santa Claus will make an appearance on Facebook and You Tube Live as Civil War living historian Kevin Rawlings explains some of the lore and evolution of Santa, beginning with his birth 1,739 years ago in ancient Lycia. 

Rawlings has portrayed the Patriotic Civil War Santa based on the illustration by Thomas Nast that appeared on the front page of Harper’s Weekly on Jan. 3, 1863 each Christmas season for 30 years.

A Civil War living historian, actor, Rawling’s research has been featured in the History Channel’s “World War II in HD” and the Vietnam War in HD.” He is the author of “We Were Marching on Christmas Day: A History and Chronicle of Christmas During the Civil War,” published by Toomey Press in 1995. Kevin has also been featured in the award-winning documentary “Becoming Santa.”

The Museum of the Grand Prairie will have free craft bags for the holiday celebration available from 1-3 p.m. on Dec. 1. Guests must wear a mask into the museum.
