Kylie Block signs to play basketball at Illinois Central College

For more reason than one, the last year has been filled with uncertainty for Villa Grove senior Kyleigh Block.

But, the 5’-6” three-sport athlete is certain that she wants to spend her first two years of college as a member of the Illinois Central College women’s basketball program.

Block, who averages 10.3 points and 4.2 assists per game for the Blue Devils, seriously considered Millikin University, Parkland College and Lincoln Land College alongside Illinois Central College. But the winning atmosphere of the Cougar program drew her in.

“The program has averaged 26 wins a year over the last 50 years,” Block said. “Everyone associated with the program has very high expectations. All of the coaches and players have a winning mentality with high and achievable goals like a National Championship.”

The opportunity to play under head coach Karrie Redeker was also a deciding factor for Block.

She is not only a great coach, but an even better person,” she said. “I also liked the players because they seemed very goal-oriented and hard-working.”

With the 2020-21 Illinois girls’ basketball season in waiting, Block has taken to the court in Clinton, Ind. with other local athletes looking for a chance to be on the court.

“It’s definitely not the same as it has been in the past, but I am still grateful that we have the opportunity to play,” she said.

“I have still been practicing and working out in hopes of getting to play my senior season even though it’s still up in the air if we will get to play or not. I think it’s important to be ready if we do.”

Part of Block’s vision for getting on the court is also to be prepared to fill any role that the Cougars need her to.

“I hope to provide anything that the team needs to win,” she said. “My strongest part of my game is definitely shooting, but if Coach Redeker needs something else I am always willing to do it. I am just excited to be a part of a very talented team.”
