Wells contributes first double-double in win over Unity

Taylor Wells registered her first double-double of the season on Thursday (Feb. 18) and two teammates scored in double figures as St. Joseph-Ogden rallied at home to defeat Tolono Unity, 44-29, in an Illini Prairie Conference game.

Unity led 16-9 after one quarter, but managed just five more field goals the remainder of the game.

Wells turned in a 10-point, 12-rebound performance.

Ella Armstrong scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half. She nailed a season-high four three-pointers. Ashlynn Lannert added 10 points, including two baskets from three-point range.

On Saturday, in a showdown between unbeaten teams, ninth-ranked Tuscola (Class 2A) edged the Spartans, 48-46, in St. Joseph.

Wells hit a season-high 15 points. Payton Jacob chipped in with eight points.

SJ-O nailed 12 of 16 free throw attempts, including 5-for-5 by Wells and 4-for-4 by Abby Behrens.

Tuscola shot into a 13-4 lead after one quarter. Wells scored nine of her points in the second quarter.

The Spartans had five players make baskets in the fourth quarter as they narrowed their deficit.

SJ-O (4-1) returns to action on Monday (Feb. 22) at Pontiac.
