Spartans rally over Bloomington Central Catholic

Ty Pence scored 39 points on Monday (March 1) and helped St. Joseph-Ogden rally to beat visiting Bloomington Central Catholic 67-61 in an Illini Prairie Conference boys’ basketball game.

BCC led after each of the first three quarters, but never by more than two points.

Pence netted three three-point shots and also pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds.

The sophomore is averaging 26.1 points and 11.6 rebounds through nine games.

Andrew Beyers also drained three three-point shots on the way to a 13-point performance. Beyers cleared four rebounds.

Hayden Brazelton had a team-high three assists.

Also sinking a three-pointer for the Spartans was Cameron Costa.

On Tuesday (March 2), playing for the second night in a row, SJ-O started slowly, falling behind visiting Chillicothe IVC 7-0 in the first 2 ½ minutes and were never able to gain a lead, dropping a 77-52 IPC decision.

IVC led, 24-6, after the first quarter, but the Spartans’ trimmed their deficit to 35-24 at halftime. IVC used a 25-13 third-quarter spree – starting with a 4-0 run to open the third stanza – to put the game away.

Pence led the Spartans with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Evan Ingram notched eight points and Jackson Rydell made seven.

Beyers grabbed four rebounds. Lukas Hutcherson handed out a team-high three assists.

SJ-O (7-2) returns to action on Friday (March 5) at home against Stanford Olympia.
