Comets win Vermilion County Conference Championship

Josh Young matched his season high with 24 points and Dalton Hobick made four three-pointers on Monday (March 8) in Oakwood’s season-ending win, a 58-50 triumph at Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin that clinched the Vermilion Valley Conference championship for the Comets.
The conference title is the second in the past three years.
Oakwood won all nine of its VVC games this year, including five on the road.
The Comets zipped into a 19-11 lead over the Blue Devils after one quarter.
Young tallied eight first-quarter points. Hobick tossed in three of his three-pointers in the second period. The Comets led at halftime, 30-23.
Young’s 24-point performance included a 12-for-12 effort from the free throw line. The junior ended the season by sinking 27 of his final 31 attempts from the line.
For the season, Young’s accuracy rate from the line was 70.8 percent.
Hobick scored 14 points against B-H/R-A. Isaiah Ruch hit 12 points. Gavin Clouse added six points and Brevin Wells added two in the finale.
The Comets made all nine of their second-half free throws and, overall, were 18-for-19 from the charity stripe.
Oakwood ends the season with a 10-2 record and a six-game winning streak. B-H/R-A has an 11-4 season record.
Four Oakwood starters ended the season with double-figure scoring averages.
Young was the leader (16.5), followed by Wells (13.5), Hobick (12.7) and Ruch (10.8).
Wells was the top free throw shooter (76.9 percent) and led the squad with 26 three-pointers. Hobick was next with 18 three-pointers.
