Gaven Clouse rushed for 202 yards and scored five touchdowns on Saturday (March 20) as Oakwood opened the football season with a 44-6 triumph at Fithian.
The Comets led 44-0 before Oblong got on the board in the fourth quarter.
Brevin Wells passed for 123 yards and a touchdown to Josh Young. Young finished with 76 receiving yards. Brady Howard had 53 receiving yards.
Young added two two-point conversions. Howard and Dalton Hobick each ended with one two-point conversion to account for the remainder of Oakwood’s scoring.
Defensively, Connor Hutson had a team-high seven tackles and forced a fumble on the opening kickoff. Noah Phillips recovered the season’s first fumble for the Comets.
Oakwood, which led, 36-0, at halftime totaled 311 rushing yards for the game.
“It was definitely interesting playing in March,” Oakwood coach Al Craig said. “I am used to the ground being rock solid and dry. Today it was sloppy and wet. It honestly felt like a playoff Saturday.
“I am so happy for our kids getting a chance to play. They loved it. We were lucky to get a beautiful spring day.”
The Comets (1-0) return to action on Friday (March 26) at Georgetown-Ridge Farm in their Vermilion Valley Conference opener. G-RF will be playing its first game of the year under Hall of Fame coach Stan Wienke.
