Spartans win 9 events in meet against Eureka

The Spartans won nine of 17 events in a non-scored girls’ track and field dual meet on Thursday (April 22) at home.

Payton Carter, Atleigh Hamilton and Macy Reed-Thompson each won an individual event and helped two relays to a first-place finish.

Hamilton prevailed in the long jump (17 feet, 1 inch). Reed-Thompson was the high jump titlist (4 feet, 10 inches). Carter won the pole vault (9 feet, 6 inches).

Carter, Hamilton and Reed-Thompson were runners on the triumphant 400- and 800-meter relays. Joining them on both relays was Raegan Crippen. The 400 relay was timed in 52.18 seconds. The 800 relay stopped the clock in 1:53.13.

Other individual winners for the Spartans were Haleigh Maddock (200 meters, 31.10 seconds), Malorie Sarnecki (400 meters, 1 minute, 7.53 seconds), Kaytlyn Baker (100 hurdles, 18.10 seconds), and Ashlyn Lannert (300 hurdles, 53.47 seconds).

In three events, SJ-O swept the top two spots.

Trailing Maddock in the 200 meters was Yamilka Casanova (second in 32.32 seconds), The 300 hurdles runner-up was Baker (54.29 seconds). The second-place finisher in the pole vault was Grace Schmitz (9 feet).

Other second-place finishers for the Spartans were Angie Chahine (100 meters, 14.08 seconds), Maya Chahine (800 meters, 3:03.97) and the 1,600-meter relay foursome of Hamilton, Schmitz, Sarnecki and Lannert. Their combined time was 4:28.12.

Five squad members finished in third place in an individual event: Casanova (long jump, 13-4), Abby Behrens (high jump, 4-8), Ava Knap (1,600 meters, 5:39.60), Jayci Hayes (200 meters, 32.48 seconds), and Maddock (100 meters, 14.34).

SJ-O returns to action on Tuesday (April 27) at home against Shelbyville.
