Carson Howard pounded four hits, including a home run, and knocked in seven runs on Monday (May 24), but the Hawks couldn’t hold onto a 10-7 lead after four innings and suffered an 18-12 baseball loss at home to Cumberland.
Ryan Cheatham and Nick Coffin each ended with two hits. Carson and Howard both scored three runs. Kurt Zimmerman socked a triple and had two RBI.
Starting pitcher Mason Wyant struck out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings.
On Wednesday (May 26), VG/Heritage scored 11 runs in the final three innings to hang a 14-6 loss on Cerro Gordo/Bement.
Cheatham hit a home run and a double, scoring three runs and driving in four to spark the Blue Devils.
Coffin, Wyant and Zimmerman each totaled two hits. Zimmerman collected four RBI. Noah Davison also scored three runs.
Reliever Dylan Ploense (2-2) pitched 3 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out three. He recorded the pitching win.
Villa Grove/Heritage (8-9) returns to action on Tuesday (June 1) at Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond.
