Morris wins 1600-meter at Vermilion Valley Conference track and field meet

Sophomore Allie Morris was the lone individual winner for Oakwood on Tuesday (May 25) in the girls’ Vermilion Valley Conference track and field meet at Salt Fork.
Morris prevailed in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5 minutes, 43.72 seconds.
She also ran a leg on the fourth-place 1,600-meter relay, which clocked a time of 4:5726. She joined Kalie Tison, Jaylynn Bugaj and Aaliyah Denius in the event.
Oakwood’s 800-meter relay foursome scored a runner-up finish. Sharing the baton were Tison, Bugaj, Dani Boleda and Luci Morris. Their combined time was 2:06.29.
Freshman Nikita Taylor was a placer in three individual events. She was sixth in both the 200 meters (30.71 seconds) and the long jump (13 feet, 7 inches) to go with an eighth-place finish in the 100 meters (14.77 seconds).
In the long jump, Luci Morris earned a seventh-place finish (12 feet, 4 inches).
Other individual placers for the Comets were Yelka Layden (fifth in 300-meter hurdles, 1:01.05), Denius (ninth in 400 meters, 1:12.95), Boleda (ninth in shot put, 23 feet, 8 inches) and Tison (ninth in discus, 66 feet, 4 inches).
Oakwood’s other points came from its 400-meter relay, which took fourth. Denius, Bugaj, Layden and Taylor had a composite time of 57.50 seconds.
The meet champion was Salt Fork (163 points) followed by Hoopeston Area (86 points). Oakwood was sixth in the nine-school meet with 30 points.
The Comets return to action on Wednesday (June 2) in a Class 1A sectional at St. Joseph-Ogden.
