Comet baseball bounces back for win over Richland County

Jacob Spears produced three hits and Dalton Hobick registered his fifth consecutive multiple-hit game on Thursday (May 27), but Oakwood dropped an 8-3 decision in a non-conference baseball game against Reed Custer in Braidwood.

Hobick’s double was the only extra-base hit in the contest.

On Saturday (May 29) at Tolono, the Comets split games against two opponents. Unity decisioned Oakwood 10-2, but the Comets bounced back with a narrow 5-4 win over Richland County.

Against Unity, Josh Young collected two hits and scored a run. Hobick also scored a run.

Grant Powell pitched four innings of three-hit relief, walking no one and striking out three. He didn’t not yield an earned run after relieving starter Travis Tiernan.

Against Richland County, Oakwood was out-hit 11-5, but broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run fourth inning.

Matthew Miller knocked in two runs for the Comets. Hobick stole two bases.

Starting pitcher Dylan Bensyl worked five innings, walking one and striking out four, to earn the win. Young threw the final two innings, matching walks and strikeouts with three.

Oakwood (12-9) returns to action on Friday (June 4) at home against Westville in its Class 2A regional opener.
