Spartan wrestling splits dual meets
By Fred Kroner
Sophomores Bryson Helfrich and Owen Birt were the only St. Joseph-Ogden wrestlers to win twice on Friday (June 4) as the team split two dual meets at home.
SJ-O recovered from a 23-0 deficit to edge Clinton 24-23 before falling 42-18 to Toledo Cumberland.
Helfrich won twice by pins, needing 62 seconds to claim a fall against Clinton and 38 seconds to end his match against Cumberland.
Birt won his first match by forfeit and then earned a 7-5 decision against Cumberland.
The Spartans started their comeback against Clinton with Conrad Miller’s 36-second pin at 170 pounds. Helfrich followed with his pin before Birt and Kyle Meccoli (220 pounds) received forfeits to clinch the team win.
SJ-O’s other winners against Cumberland, besides Helfrich and Birt, were Dakota Pinaire (8-6 decision at 126 pounds) and Garrett Denhart (by forfeit at 132 pounds).
The Spartans (7-10) return to action on Tuesday (June 8) at Tolono Unity in a meet that will also include St. Thomas More.
