Wells named Valedictorian of Oakwood Class of 2021

There’s only one way to get to where you’d like to go: learn.

This is the mindset Oakwood High School’s Brevin Wells, who was named the 2021 Valedictorian, carried through four years of high school.

“I don’t really love school, but I do love to learn whether it is in education, sports or other things because I believe it is the best way to grow as a person,” Wells said. “It means having the opportunity to be the best version of myself.”

Reaching the highest academic honor was not something Wells had his sights set on. Actually, he didn’t think it was something that would happen. But, like all things in Well’s life, he said it was a team-effort.

“All of my family and teachers were very supportive of me and without their help I would not have been able to accomplish what I did,” he said.

A two-year Honor Society member, Wells was also awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Danville Area Community College where he will also play basketball for two years.

The 5’10” point guard who averaged 13.5 ppg was named to the All-Vermillion County and All-Vermillion Conference; the same honors he earned as the Oakwood High School quarterback in the spring of 2021. Wells was also named to the News-Gazette and Commercial News All-Area first team in basketball.

“It was important for me to get involved in these sports because they have always been very important to my family and they were things that I loved to do,” he said. “The people in my high school are what make it a special place, from the teachers to the students everyone has some sort of bond with each other.”

Wells said that he is undecided on a major or professional path at this moment, but he does know one thing:

“Always make the best of the situation around you and have fun with everything as you will never get them back.”
