Four Spartans participated in the 22-school Heyworth Class 1A wrestling regional tournament on Sunday (June 13) and one qualified for the sectional.
The entire postseason series is sponsored by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) rather than by the IHSA.
Keeping his season alive was 195-pound Owen Birt. He posted two pins for the day and ended in sixth place.
The top six placers at each of the 14 weight classes will move on to a sectional, also hosted by Heyworth, on Saturday (June 19).
For Birt to qualify for state, he will need to place among the top four at the upcoming sectional tournament.
SJ-O’s other regional competitors were Dakota Pinaire (126 pounds), Chase Chapman (145 pounds) and Kyle Meccoli (220 pounds).
