By Fred Kroner
Two St. Joseph-Ogden underclassmen secured berths in a Class 1A sectional golf tournament after carding 18-hole rounds in the 80s on Wednesday (Sept. 29) at a regional held at Turtle Run, in Danville.
Junior Jacob Kern tied for seventh individually after shooting a team-best 85. He was able to continue his season as did junior teammate McGwire Atwood, who shot an 89 and finished 12th overall.
As a team, the Spartans finished a strong fourth in a meet where 13 schools had entries.
Regional champion Monticello had a team composite of 330. The Sages were followed by Judah Christian (362), St. Thomas More (376) and SJ-O (377).
The top three teams advanced to the sectional as did the top10 players not on qualifying teams. The Spartans missed advancing their entire team by one stroke.
Kern and Atwood will compete in the sectional on Monday (Oct. 4) at Balmoral Woods, in Crete.
In 10 of 12 meets this season, Kern has posted the top SJ-O score. Atwood’s regional score (89) was his best 18-hole round of the season.
Kern has shot between 82 and 87 in each of his five 18-hole events this season.
