Oakwood realizes upset in Vermilion County Tournament

The seventh-grade Oakwood Junior High girls’ basketball team upset third-seeded Georgetown to open play in the Vermilion County Tournament on Monday (Oct. 18).
The sixth-seeded Knights prevailed, 17-10, to advance into the semifinals.
Ireland Harrison hit a team-high eight points. Brooklyn Myers scored five points and Lainee Smith finished with four points.
Oakwood’s seventh-grader (4-5) dropped a 31-11 decision at Potomac on Thursday (Oct. 14).
Myers tallied six points, Harrison had three and Sidney Dunavan scored two points.
Oakwood’s eighth-grade team found itself playing Potomac in back-to-back games.
In a regular-season contest on Thursday (Oct. 14), Oakwood lost at Potomac, 33-22, after matching a season’s high for points scored.
Caydence Vermillion netted eight points. Gracie Hanner had six points while Sophia Hart and Brynlie Wait contributed three points apiece. Mady Nicoson chipped in with two points.
The rematch came on Tuesday (Oct. 19) in a first-round Vermilion County Tournament game. Potomac followed up with a 22-15 triumph.
Vermilion led with five points and Hart scored four. Three teammates totaled two points apiece: Sophia Aquino, Hanner and Nicoson.
The loss eliminated Oakwood’s eighth-graders from the tournament.
Oakwood returns to action on Monday (Nov. 1) at home against Westville.
