Comets end Monticello Hoopla Tournament in fifth place

The Oakwood boys’ basketball team won its final two games in the Monticello Hoopla Tournament and finished in fifth place.
In the fifth-place contest on Wednesday (Dec. 29), the Comets used 11 of 14 accuracy from the free-throw line in the final period to turn back Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, 54-45.
Dalton Hobick and Josh Young each nailed 21 points. Hobick drained 6-of-6 fourth-quarter free throws. Gaven Clouse added six points.
Oakwood carried a tender 37-34 lead into the last quarter.
On Tuesday (Dec. 28), the Comets split two games at Monticello, following a 50-41 setback against Paxton-Buckley-Loda with a 59-48 conquest versus Ridgeview.
Against PBL, Young hit a team-high 11 points. Grant Powell netted nine points and Tanner Pichon ended with eight points. Hobick totaled six points.
The teams were tied, 32-32, after three quarters before PBL ended the game on an 18-9 run.
Against Ridgeview, Young led the way for Oakwood with 18 points. Hobick netted 14 points. Clouse and Pichon each registered eight points.
In its first-round game of the Monticello Hoopla Tournament, Oakwood dropped a 62-42 decision to Tuscola on Monday (Dec. 28).
At halftime, the Comets were within three points, trailing 26-23.
Young led Oakwood with 16 points. Hobick scored nine points and Clouse contributed six points.
Oakwood (13-4) returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 4) at Hoopeston Area.
