Spartan wrestling capture wins over Carlyle and Toledo Cumberland

Three St. Joseph-Ogden wrestlers finished with wins in two dual meets on Thursday (Jan. 20) at El Paso.
Owen Birt (195 pounds) earned a 6-1 decision and a pin. Hunter Ketchum (182 pounds) registered a pin and received a forfeit. Quincy Jones (220 pounds) also posted a pin and had a forfeit.
Other Spartans to win non-forfeited matches were Holden Brazelton (120 pounds) with a 15-3 major decision and Matt Falls (145 pounds) with an 8-3 decision.
SJ-O lost to Clinton, 46-30, and lost to El Paso, 48-28.
On Saturday (Jan. 22), the Spartans competed at home for the first time this season and defeated two opponents. SJ-O topped Carlyle, 48-9, and Toledo Cumberland, 39-21.
Four SJ-O wrestlers were 2-0 for the day: Brazelton (120 and 126 pounds), Landen Butts (126 and 132 pounds), Garrett Denhart (138 pounds) and Jones (220 pounds).
Brazelton pinned both of his opponents. Butts, Denhart and Jones had one pin and received one forfeit win.
SJ-O’s quickest fall of the day was by Jones in 19 seconds.
Spartans who were 1-1 without receiving a forfeit win were Emmitt Holt (113 pounds) and Austin Cotter (285 pounds). Cotter produced a pin in 1:21 and Holt secured a 4-3 overtime decision.
The Spartans (8-16) return to action on Thursday (Jan. 27) at home against Hoopeston Area.
