Ingram plays in Conference All-Star Game, Pence named to IBCA Class 2A All-State team

By Fred Kroner

Given a second chance to win his final game of the season, Monticello’s Kevin Roy was successful on Saturday (March 19) at Gibson City.

One week after directing the Sages to a second-place finish in the Class 2A boys’ basketball state tournament, Roy guided the Illini Prairie Conference senior all-stars to a come-from-behind 83-66 victory over the top Heart of Illinois Conference seniors.

Roy’s 13-player squad featured players from eight IPC schools, including St. Joseph-Ogden senior Evan Ingram.

Ingram nailed 2 of 4 three-point shots and collected six points.

His second trey came after the IPC – which held a 20-point third-quarter lead – found its lead reduced to nine points with less than 4 minutes remaining.

Ingram’s shot expanded the IPC lead back to double digits, 69-57, and the lead never dropped below 12 thereafter.

In the pre-game, six-player dunk contest, the winner was Monticello’s three-sport athlete Joey Sprinkle. In the game, Sprinkle contributed five points – including a three-pointer – and three rebounds.

In a separate development, SJ-O junior Ty Pence was the No. 1 vote-getter for the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 2A All-State team. Pence averaged a double-double for the season.
