Illinois budget includes tax relief measures

Most taxpayers in Illinois will see some relief within the fiscal year 2023 budget.

Signed on Tuesday, the 2023 budget includes $1.83 billion in tax relief for working families, including direct checks and suspension of tax on gas and groceries.

Independent filers in 2021 who made under $200,000 will receive a $50 check while joint filers who made less than $400,000 will receive a $100 check. Parents who claimed dependents will receive $100 per dependent, up to three children per family.

The bill also suspended the grocery tax for a year and increases in the motor fuel tax for six months.

For one week in August the state will suspend the tax on clothing and school supplies and will double the tax credit for teachers who buy classroom supplies. Additionally, the bill allows for a one-time property tax rebate of 5-percent of the property taxes paid, up to $300 per household.
