SJO finishes sixth at Spartan Classic

Two relay teams finished in the runner-up position on Friday (April 29) to highlight the list of St. Joseph-Ogden placers in the annual Spartan Classic boys’ track and field meet.

Spencer Wilson and Isiah Mock were on both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relay foursomes that placed second.

They were joined by Aidan McCorkle and Logan Smith on the 1,600 unit, which was timed in 3:36.11.

Teaming up with Wilson and Mock on the 3,200 relay were Charlie Mabry and Luke Stegall. Their collective time was 8:33.36.

The Spartans produced the third-place entry in the 400-meter relay. Combining for a time of 44.31 seconds were Burch, McCorkle, Aidan Moberg and Jonathan Poulter.

Another SJ-O relay finished fourth in the varsity division. The grouping of Tyler Burch, Smith, Colin Wayland and McCorkle were timed in 1:34.94.

Mount Zion copped team honors in the 24-school meet with 76 points. SJ-O ended sixth with 37 ½ points.

In events restricted to freshmen and sophomores, Mount Zion and Tuscola tied for first with 22 points. SJ-O was third with 19 points.

The Spartans’ top-placing freshmen-sophomore entry was the runner-up 400-meter relay. Runners Smith, Brock Trimble, Wayland and Mason Guido were timed in 45.94 seconds.

SJ-O ended with three placers in varsity field events.

Trimble was fourth in the discus (144 feet, 7 inches), Charlie Schmitz tied for sixth in the pole vault (9 feet, 10 inches) and Wayland shared eighth place in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches).

Burch was a double-placer in the sprint races. He was fourth in the 200 meters (23.96 seconds) and seventh in the 100 meters (11.59 seconds).

Other Spartans among the top 10 in individual running races were: Mabry (fifth in the 1,600 meters, 4:38.58), Braden Clampitt (sixth in the 300 hurdles, 44.65 seconds), McCorkle (eighth in the 100-meter dash, 11.61 seconds), Stegall (eighth in the 1,600 meters, 4:48.56), Elijah Mock (ninth in the 800 meters, 2:07.84) and Carson Maroon (ninth in the 3,200 meters, 10:40.54).

In other freshmen-sophomore races, Wilson grabbed second in the 400 meters (54.10 seconds). Holden Jones grabbed fifth in the 1,600 meters (4:55.99), Isiah Mock  was sixth in the 1,600 meters (4:58.84), Guido was eighth in the 400 meters (56.70 seconds), Smith was eighth in the 100 meters (12.12 seconds) and Corbin Wells was 10th in the 200 meters (25.28 seconds).

SJ-O returns to action on Tuesday (May 3) in the Illini Prairie Conference meet at Chillicothe IVC.
