Comets finish fourth at VCC meet

Oakwood’s boys’ track and field team finished fourth on Friday (May 6) in the seven-school Vermilion County Meet at Hoopeston Area.

The meet champion was Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin with 170 points. Oakwood totaled 73 points.

The Comets’ top individual finisher was Austin McDaniel, the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles. His time was 16.59 seconds.

One Oakwood relay also placed second. The foursome of Connor Smith, Kaden McDaniel, Jakob Rupp and Saul Carrillo was timed in 4:02.66.

Austin McDaniel also captured third-place finishes in two events and Thomas Wells posted one third-place performance.

McDaniel was third in the 300-meter hurdles (44.61 seconds) and the triple jump (37 feet, 7 inches).

Wells was third in the 3,200 meters (11:49.35).

Oakwood’s 800-meter relay also took third. Sharing the baton were Connor Moss, Kaden McDaniel, Macen Phillips and Bryson McDaniel. Their combined time was 1:48.37.

In Austin McDaniel’s fourth event, he ended fourth in the long jump (18 feet).

Also placing fourth for the Comets were Bryson McDaniel (200 meters in 24.88 seconds), Carrillo (400 meters in 57.10 seconds), Rupp (800 meters in 2:25.95), Wells (1,600 meters in 5:27.98) and Doug Myers (discus at 103 feet, 9 inches).

The 400-meter relay of Moss, Carrillo, Phillips and Smith were fourth in 49.18 seconds.

The team’s other top-eight placers were Phillips (fifth in the 200 meters in 26.50 seconds), Bryson McDaniel (fifth in the triple jump at 35 feet, 7 inches), Devin Sanders (sixth in the shot put at 34 feet, 4 inches and seventh in the discus at 95 feet,3 inches), Smith (seventh in the 100 meters in 12.52 seconds) and Bryson McDaniel (eighth in the long jump at 15 feet, 6 inches).

Oakwood returns to action on Monday (May 9) in the Vermilion Valley Conference meet at Salt Fork.
