Oakwood track and field competes at VCC meet

Austin McDaniel finished among the top three in three individual events on Monday (May 9) in the 11-team Vermilion Valley Conference boys’ track and field meet at Salt Fork.

 McDaniel was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles (16.54 seconds). He secured third-place finishes in both the 300-meter hurdles (43.67 seconds) and the triple jump (38 feet, 1 inch).

Teammate Devin Sanders landed two top-10 finishes. Sanders was seventh in the shot put (38 feet, 8 inches) and ninth in the discus (102 feet, 10 inches).

Oakwood’s other individual placers were Saul Carrillo (fourth in the 400 meters in 55.52 seconds), Thomas Wells (fourth in the 1,600 meters in 5:18.67), Bryson McDaniel (sixth in the triple jump at 34 feet, 6 inches, and eighth in the 200 meters in 26.77 seconds), Jakob Rupp (seventh in the 800 meters in 2:22.82) and Doug Myers (eighth in the discus at 105 feet, 4 inches).

The Comets’ 1,600-meter relay ended in fifth place. Sharing the baton were Connor Smith, Kaden McDaniel, Rupp and Carrillo. Their combined time was 3:54.95.

Team honors were captured by Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin with 148 points. Oakwood was seventh with 31 points.

The Comets return to action on Friday (May 20) in the St. Joseph-Ogden Class 1A Sectional.
