Taylor and Wells finish among Top 5 at VCC meet

Nikita Taylor and Alyssa Wells were the top Oakwood individual placers on Monday (May 9) in the 11-school Vermilion Valley Conference girls’ track and field meet at Salt Fork.
Taylor was the 400-meter runner-up in 1 minute, 4.86 seconds. Wells finished third in the 300-meter hurdles in 57.24 seconds.
The Comets had two relays that ended in third.
In the 800-meter relay, Taylor Smoot, Luci Morris, Gwen Cambron and Wells were timed in 2:00.70.
The 1,600-meter relay foursome of Cambron, Smoot, Wells and Taylor ran third with a time of 4:54.19.
Oakwood’s 400-meter relay squad took fourth. Sharing the baton were Smoot, Morris, Cambron and Taylor. Their collective time was 55.86 seconds.
The Comets had two placers in the long jump. Taylor finished sixth at 17 feet, 9 inches and Morris landed eighth at 14 feet, 2 inches.
The school’s other top-10 placers were Quinn Sperry (eighth in the discus at 74 feet, 3 inches) and Cambron (ninth in the 100 meters in 14.74 seconds).
Salt Fork captured team honors with 123 points. Oakwood placed eighth with 31 points.
Oakwood returns to action on Friday(May 13) in the Salt Fork Class 1A Sectional at Catlin.
